Why Total Motion Therapy and Yoga
by Roland Hill
(The Yoga Teacher who brought Bikram Hot Yoga to North Carolina)
Hello. My name is Roland Hill. I’ll be teaching your TMR/Yoga seminar. The following is my story of how Total Motion Release (TMR) has profoundly changed my teaching and practice of yoga.
In depth study and certifications in Kripalu yoga, Bikram yoga, IRest yoga nidra, Yin yoga, meditation and Total Motion Release 1,2 3, continually remind me of the breadth and depth of yoga. Direct studies with teachers such as Bikram Choudry, Tias Little, Amrit Desai, and Paul Grilley and others confirms my convictions that there are many different ways of viewing the world.
This story begins in 2000 when I was approaching the most exciting time in my life. We were opening our first hot yoga studio! However, through all this excitement I was entering a very dark period of physical and mental pain. An MRI confirmed spondylolisthesis, and old injury from my childhood. My L4 and L5 had cracked and slipped forward creating an imbalance in my spine. This shift, according to medical theory, was the cause of my incessant pain and tightness. To make a long story short, I tried everything….from a chiropractor in LA, hanging in water with weights around my waist…to osteopaths, homeopaths, naturepaths, faith healers, etc. You name it, and chances are I tried it! It was as if all my yoga training from all the different lineages had deceived me. There was little agreement on what my problem was, much less how to treat it. So exhausted and at my wits end, I relented to modern medicine with a harrowing five hour spinal fusion at Duke Hospital. The recovery was long and excruciating…but even more disheartening was the realization that the old patterns of holding and pain were still there…unchanged. Deeper and deeper I spiraled into depression. I knew at this point it was no longer about finding the answers. I had to let go of a lot of closely held belief systems. I had to open my mind to something new. I had to change. I had to stop looking for the answers ….and start embracing the questions. What was my pain trying to teach me? Why was I still hurting? Why was my right hamstring ALWAYS so tight? Why couldn’t I stretch my right side?
In April 2007 I left a message for a physical therapist looking for Feldenkreis therapy. I liked it a lot and it always received good results. The owner of the clinic, Tom Delanzo Baker called back insisting that I come and try his new therapy…Total Motion Release. I relented and made my appointment for the next day.
The clinic was a typical medical setting. But, it didn’t take long to realize that I was about to have a new experience. Tom kept talking about pain and how pain was the body’s super-intelligent voice of wisdom…and that movement was the body’s way of telling us where it wanted to go. And, if we moved where our bodies wanted to go, we would get a release. “Hold it right there, I thought…A RELEASE!” That word immediately resonated with me. For it actually made my symptoms worse by stretching in the past. A release? Someway, I knew that I had found something that was going to give me a whole new powerful perspective on body wisdom.
And then it happened! MY WOW MOMENT! Tom showed me that I could sit in a chair and stand up on my left side…but not on my right. He emphasized that a weak right side was not due to a lack of strength but to an imbalance. This really sounded interesting to me. In other words, this all was a part of the big pattern of holding that was creating constant tightness in my lower back. But Tom’s answer was not to work or strengthen the weak side. Instead, counter-intuitively, he wanted to work the good side. The good side was stronger and it was where my body wanted to go. So, off I went – up and down, up and down – for three sets of twenty on my good side. At the end of the third set, I just sat quietly – letting things settle- reconnecting with sensations in my lower back. My back felt so different with a deeply profound calming of the holding patterns that had restricted my back for so many years.
I can’t really describe a RELEASE. It’s very different from stretching. When you have a release your body will know it…on a subtle and not so subtle level.
So, if you are struggling with your own issues and have hit that brick wall – physically, mentally, and spiritually – I encourage you to come to this seminar. Do it for yourself. Do it for someone else. Open your heart and open your mind. You will get a release.
In Health,
Roland Hill
