Tom, another cool story, a female client 42 years old told me she has not been able to touch her toes in 14 years. She is stiff as a board, she had been to Physical Therapist, Chiropractors and massage therapist and still no toe touch. She asked if i could help her? What do i say to that? Instantly the light bulb came on and i said, lets try the leg extension, tested for her good side and then added rotation to her good side. Did four sets just in case, retested, and for the first time in 14 years she was able to touch her toes, with tears in her eyes she gave me a big hug. Thanks to you my friend. My wife and I are living overseas in Lebanon. For the TMR level 1 home study course, I used my wife and myself as patients in practicing the approach. My wife suffers from fatigue so I switched the order of the ranked exercises, choosing the easier ones for her to perform first. Both of us succeeded in reducing our issues. My wife at first was pretty skeptical since she preferred my hands on approach from the past. However, soon she became much more cooperative once she began to experience results. Thank you for your desire to see patients improve which lead to your discovery of an amazing approach. David R. DPT

Absolutely spectacular!
Just saw a pretty Big Celebrity. He was desperate, skeptical, had only one treatment before going back to set .. But trusted me from previous experiences a year ago when he was in town.
Wham BAM! Came in hunched over and shifted from playing soccer. Pain 80/100. Thought he was in "good shape" prior to this injury. I explained turtle and our body imbalances, and that I had been studying with this brilliant therapist for years with this outside of the box revolutionary type therapy ... And this will work!! He trusted me, we proceeded with success after success! He walked out asking if he could go work out- he felt 100% better! I just smiled and said - just do these exercises 2-3 times/day until your pain is 0 each time. I told him to continue as we did and email or all me with questions. He left hugging me.
It was a great day! Never hurts to get the celeb reputation ;)
But I love anyone that gets better and hugs me we they leave ;)

If you recall, I was uncertain how to use TMR on non-verbal autistic kids with behavioral issues. I saw a 16 year-old young man for compensatory make-up sessions. After several weeks developing a rapport and following his treatment regime from the covering therapist, I felt there was more that I could do for him. Stiffest low back ever, which is most evident during walking and lowering to the floor. Just getting him to lie down on the mat was challenging. Receptive communication limited and I did not have a PEC card to explain what I wanted to do. The only move I used with him was the lower trunk twist. I held him in the position for 2 minutes (when I could) and for several repetitions. I think he felt I was wrestling with him or holding him down for behavioral restraint issues. Long story short, after the first session of LT twists, he walked down 11 stairs and took two of them with alternating feet. First time in his life. Second session, he took 5 steps alternating feet. I felt so happy for him. The staff could not believe it. -- Lori Mulhall, PT

Hey there this is chad summers. I went to the TMR course online in dec.
I've been having great success! I'm a PTA and i do home health and work at a nursing home. The first day after the course when I started using TMR, I used TMR on 6 pts and saw really great improvement; even with balance issues.
One pt had back pain and TMR significantly decreased it using trunk rotations. Another had right shoulder pain and got the shoulder pain gone using the trunk rotations . Another had right knee pain and got rid of it with standing lunges.
The next 3 were balance patients. There is a balance test called the MCTSIB test. Its a test with 4 standing positions, 2 on the floor and 2 on foam. It tests balance and sensory integration. The first 2 testing positions are standing on the floor with feet together, hands on the chest. The first position is eyes open and the second position is eyes closed. normal balance is to hold it for 30 seconds in each position.
For these next 3 pts I tested them in the 2nd position then I did the TMR twists on all of them
First one before TMR- 10 secs. After TMR 60 secs
Second one before TMR 20 secs. After TMR 60 secs
Third one before TMR 20 secs. After TMR 60 secs.
Along with being able to increase the time they also had decrease sway. They were much more stable. I'll be sending their TMR forms to u.
It's been really neat seeing the results from TMR.
One of the tests on the tinetti test is rhomberg standing with eyes closed but holding for 60 seconds. So doing TMR will help improve tinetti test scores.
When I get a chance and have the time I want to do a full tinetti test then do TMR and then redo the tinetti test and note the improvement In The scores.
I'm noticing that With the trunk I'm checking all the motions for the trunk and so far it's always the rotation that's the most limited. It's probably because the older population is more restricted in rotation than other motions.
These were all on the first day and I had great results.
On the next day I had pt do TMR leg raises and that improved rhomberg standing eyes closed from 13 secs to 60 secs.
I having great success with TMR!
On myself I had a lot of right shoulder pain and soreness in both shoulders and knees when waking up in the mornings. by doing TMR on my arms, trunk and legs all my pain is gone and my left shoulder feels much looser and freer as well. Also I'm not having any soreness in the mornings.
TMR is a great asset for fixing yourself and prevention. And it's something u can do thats quick and easy and it's made a huge impact on my well being.
I'm also finding that when finding a 1D issue, doing TMR on the good side but going into 2D,3D motions decreases the issues quicker. We'll probably learn that in TMR 2,3.

Man, this Total Motion Release stuff is crazy at times! Yesterday, I
worked with a person who had dislocated his left shoulder on Aug 6th
last year. He told me that there were some mistakes done by the
doctors and physios during the treatment because of which the shoulder
was still not positioned properly as seen in the most recent x-ray. He
was still going through physiotherapy for his shoulder.
He couldn't raise his arm up completely. In layman terms, his biceps
couldn't reach his face when he raised the arm. Also he was
compensating for this arm raise with spinal extension and elbow
flexion. It felt 'stuck'.
I checked him out and told him that as per my diagnosis the problem
lies in his hips and not shoulder. He looked at me as if I'm crazy.
Anyway, we went ahead with the exercise. I asked him to raise his leg
up straight while he was seated. Did this leg raise for a total of 1
minute.
Now time to see if there is an improvement or not. He raised his arm
and his biceps were next to his ear, arm completely straight,
significantly reduced compensatory movements! In one minute. In about
30 minutes his arm movement was almost normal. I finally came to the
conclusion that it was his sitting posture that was the cause of the
shoulder joint immobility and pain.
Mind you, he is one of the larger distributor of orthopaedic and
surgical equipments in the city. When we were done, he said that all
the orthopaedic doctors know him. He has undergone treatment from the
best of them since August. He felt much more better in 30 minutes of
Total Motion Release than combined ortho and physio interventions for
5 months! Tom Dalanzo Baker, you are a magician, wizard and a genius
for creating this magic called Total Motion Release! -- Amit Sharma

Hi, Tom!
I am eagerly awaiting my TMR-2 course with you in Raleigh in January! I LOVE using this stuff! My current "star" TMR pupil is an 11-year old young lady who had a severe brachial plexus injury at birth. She underwent two of the extensive surgical procedures that are performed by the brachial plexus "guru" in Texas, one during her infancy and one around age two. She apparently had some PT following these surgeries, but had definite residual deficits. She is extremely self-motivated and bright, and now finds herself wanting to be able to do "normal" things (like cheerleading) without feeling discomfort and without "looking" like her arm is different than other people's. She is very good at communicating and identifying goals for herself, which is a PT's dream, of course!
So, on the day of my evaluation, I had about 15 minutes remaining and I decided to just take a few minutes to introduce TMR. The "issue" we chose to address was approaching a doorknob and opening it (supinating) without involving the entire trunk / body to accomplish the task (major leaning / twisting). Mind you, this is an 11-year-old neurological injury, with all the "stuff" that has set in since then! With ONLY the arm raise sequence (due to time limitations) performed, she got up to retest the issue, and she, her mother, and I were all momentarily dumbfounded by what we saw and what she felt. This was quickly followed by much cheering! She has been great at doing home exercises, and I have seen her twice since then. There is definite improvement in function each session (working on functional tasks such as putting a ponytail in her own hair, and carrying a schoolbook in the involved arm). Also, I feel it is noteworthy that she came to me with active elbow extension of -20, and passive of -10. I have not done ANY "hands-on" stretching, or other conventional work on the arm. She is now at active extension of -10 and passive of -4! I just can't wait to increase my skill level with TMR so that I can get even better results (hopefully) with even more people! -- Emily Freeman, MSPT

I wanted to tell you the story of a patient I provided TMR with today...She is breast cancer survivor with metastasis to her spinal column at T11-T12, she has had multiple surgeries with difficulty lying supine and transitioning from supine to sit and sit to stand with significant muscle spasms. Performed TMR and after about 2 rounds of treatment, she was able to touch the floor with straight legs with TMR number going from 60 to 0. Her muscle spasms dissipated with sit to stand and she was able to lye supine for the first time without cushion under her thoracic/lumba spine. She had nothing but pure excitement on her face and her comments about how great she felt at the end of her session. I just wanted to say thank you for the opportunity to apply your method to help patients feel better about themselves and their ability to improve their overall function, especially a patient with multiple conditions due to cancer.
Thank you again for always being there to listen and lend advice when a fork in the road surfaces with a patient treatment approach. -- Todd Santore, PT

Just got a new patient: stiff as a board. 72 y.o. male. Bad neck. Severe pain and headaches. Has had injections, nerve ablation, PT. Doctor says go see Terri. Tested arm and leg raise and twist. Leg raises helped: pain from 7/10 to 4/10 and ROM much better. Twist hurt in sitting so did it supine. Day 2 hip is hurting from leg raise, neck is terrible. Did bent knee toe reach. Pain 8/10 to 2/10!!! -- Terri Holcombe, PT

My name is Michele Harris. I'm a PT in Austin, Texas and I have been following the TMR blogs and emails for some time. My background of 20+ years as a PT was proceeded by 12 years as a competitive gymnast. I have spent most of my professional career treating and teaching in the areas of pedi and adult neuro, seating and assistive technology, movement disorder, and deformity management. Over the past four years I have seen almost exclusively the ALS population where I have incorporated more joint and chest wall mobilization and myofascial therapies in hopes to maximize respiratory function and ease the musculoskeletal discomfort and deformity which accompanies their progressive decline. This population has taught me more about healing than any other I have yet encountered.
I have personally struggled with and suppressed a very stubborn myofascial system myself. I am fit, flexible, and bounced back well after having each of our three sons. That said, over the last couple years it has become increasingly difficult to ignore my own day to day myofascial meltdown waiting to happen. I have found it painful to run any longer because of the joint instability/discomfort during and the amazing soreness after that I experience.
I have to admit I began studying the TMR information on your website for my own self-preservation more than direct patient care application.
As an ex-gymnast, seating and movement disorder therapist, I have always embraced the concept of tensegrity and deeply appreciate the complex holistic beauty of the human body. I know both intuitively and empirically that stretching a restricted muscle alone has limited lasting gain, and I was personally never successful in relieving my own "tightness" although I remain quite flexible. I began using the TMR concepts on myself as a tool to manage my own imbalances and I now empower my patients in a whole new way. I have had fascinating results and my intrigue continues to grow.
My husband, David, is a PM&R physician specialized in regenerative medicine and reconstructive injection strategies. He was on the cutting edge of prolotherapy back in the early-mid 90's and does a great deal of PRP, ozone, and now autologous stem cell joint and attachment injections for regeneration of the white tissues. He has kept hundreds from surgical intervention and has resolved the continued ligament, tendon, and joint degenerative pain plaguing many after surgery.
David and I plan to open a practice together here in Austin late summer 2011. We firmly believe in the body's innate ability to heal and humbly realize our blessed position as healthcare provider is to naturally facilitate and clear the barriers to this healing. His focus on regenerative medicine and mine on muscle balance, restriction management, education, and empowerment will be integrated with a nutrition and bio-identical hormone specialist. You can see how beautifully TMR dovetails with our goals, and I look forward to learning all I can from you.
Absolutely love seeing people use it. I am using it almost every day with a variety of older clients and this week have seen tremendous improvement on a lady with major L sided contractures who I have treated unsuccessfully before because her pain was too great for even very gentle PROM. On eval day and the next treatment day we left her pain free from 8-9/10 pain to 0/10. The OT has been working with me and we will be inservicing the other staff so she can get consistent treatment. This has been amazing. I was wondering if contractures respond.. this lady was able to understand what we were asking her to do on the good side ..which is not so great either. But her L LE and UE improved passively without her hollering to stop so we could get nursing treatment of skin problems that have been untreatable. Her husband was present both treatments and was amazed.
In my opinion patients helping others is the best reward of TMR. I love it when they tell me they helped someone else. Talk about paying it forward. Patty Chase, PT
