A Twist On The Arm Raise

Just a little thing I've been doing for well over a year. Many of you may have already done it...or not!

Occasionally a back patient will have a problem doing an arm raise because it hurts the back. Usually it is simply because they are extending the spine at the same time.

I always ask them while they are doing the exercise if they "feel it in the back". If yes is the answer I tell them to keep the arm up but slump in the back.

They feel better...the result is the same.

I use the words "feel it in the back" because it is kinda vague and pulls them away from using the word "pain" or something similar. I find it interesting how using some words will either be calming or alarming.

I like calming.
